Honesty is the best policy

"Honesty is the Best Policy" is a universal truth. The fruits of honesty are honour, grace and reward. While, dishonesty brigs about disgrace, curse and abuse. The story of a woodcutter proves the truth of this famous proverb
Once there lived a poor woodcutter in a certain village. He was honest and pious. He earned his livelihood by cutting woods all they day long. One day, as usual, he was cutting woods at the bank of river. By chance his axe slipped from his hands and fell into the river. He became gloomy and did not know what to do. He began to shed tears and prayed to God for help.
Just then, An angel, happened to pass that way. He came to the old wood-cuter and asked the cause of his distress. The woodcutter told him that his axe had fallen into the river and he could not buy another. An Angel was much moved on seeing his pathetic condition. He assured him of his help and jumped into the river. He brought out a golden axe and gave it to the woodcutter. But, the woodcutter refused to take it and said,"This is not mine." Angel once again dived into the water and brought out a silver axe. The woodcutter once again refused to take it and said, "My axe is made of iron."Angel jumped into the river for third time and brought out his iron axe. On seeing his axe, the woodcutter cried with joy, "Yes, this is mine."
The woodcutter got his axe and thanked him. Angel was greatly impressed by the honesty of the poor woodcutter. He praised his honesty and gave him the other two axes as a reward. This story proves that honesty is the best policy.

Union is Strength

"Union is Strength" is a universal truth.The fruit of unity are peace, strength and prosperity. While disunity brings about trouble, failure and ruin.Unity among persons of a family or a society or nation leads them to success. The story of a farmer and his sons proves the truth of this proverb.
Once there was an old farmer.He had three sons who always quarreled with one another. The old man was greatly worried to see this situation. He tired to settle their disputes by words but all in vain.
Unfortunately, the old farmer fell ill. He was on the verge of death. He wanted to make a last attempt to reconcile his sons. He sent for his sons. He asked them to bring some sticks and tie them in a bundle. Then, he asked his sons to break the bundle of sticks.All of them tired their best to break but none of them succeeded.
Then the old man asked his sons to untie the bundle. He asked them to break then sticks and they broke the sticks easily. At this point, the old farmer addressed his sons that they would be strong and unconquerable like the bundle of sticks if untied. Otherwise, they would be destroyed like sticks. Many people working together one much stronger than many persons working separately. Saying this , the old farmer breathed his last.
The practical piece of advice had a great impact on the quarreling sons. They promised to live in peace to enjoy the fruits of unity in future. They forget their disputes and conquered every obstacle in the way of success with the force of unity.The family becomes wealthy, prosperous and happy very soon. This story proves that union is strength.
F.Schiller says:-
"Even the weak become strong
when they are united,
therefore, it is said that
United we stand, divided we falt"

All That Glitters is Not Gold

"All That Glitters is Not Gold" is a universal truth.Inner beauty is more precious than outer beauty.Appearances are often deceptive.We should not be proud of our innate qualities because pride hath a fall. The story of a foolish stag proves the truth of this famous proverb.
Once a stag was drinking water at stream of clear water in a forest.He saw his reflection in the water.He was greatly impressed by the beauty and shine of his glittering horns.He felt proud of his beautiful horns.He felt sorry at the sight of his thin legs.He thought his legs ugly and unworthy of him.So, he began to curse his ugly legs.
The beauty of his antlers praised,
But at his legs in horror gazed:
They looked like spindles as they shrank,
Out of his sight beneath the bank.

The stag was lost in his dreams when he heard the howls of hounds.He jumped up and ran towards the forest to save his life.He ran as fast he could.His thin and ugly legs were of great help him.Soon, he covered a long distance and was beyond the reach of the hounds.To be more safe, he hid himself in a thick bush and again lost in his sweet dreams of beautiful horns.The hounds continued their chase.Soon, they reached near the bush.When the stag heard their howls, he jumped up to ran away.But, unfortunately, his beautiful horns got entangled in the bush. He struggled very hard to free himself from the thorny bushes but in vain.He repented of his pride and cursed his beautiful horns which had entrapped him there. The hounds fell upon him and tore him into pieces in no time.It is clear from this story that all that glitters is not gold.
All that glitters is not gold;
Often have you heard that told;
Many a man his life has sold
But my outside to behold:

My Favourite Poet

A poet is born, not made.

Allama Iqbal is the greatest poet-philosopher of Asia.He is one of those eminent personalities who have changed the course of history with their tireless and selfless efforts. He was the father of ideology of Pakistan.He aroused the sleeping Muslims of India with the help of his inspiring poetry.His poetry infused a new spirit in the Muslims youth and set them to action.To a Pakistan, he is a great poet as Shakespeare to an Englishman.

Allama Iqbal was born at Sialkot on the 9th of november, 1877. His father Sheikh Noor Muhammad, was a great mystic. Iqbal inherited mysticism and deep love for religion from his father.He got his early education at a local high school and passed his intermediate examination from Murrey college, Sialkot.He was greatly impressed by his teacher, Syed Mir Hassan, who taught him Arabic, Persian and Islamiat.Then he joined Government College Lahore for higher education.There, he was greatly inspired by Dr.Arnold who advised him to study philosophy.In 1899,he did his M.A. in philosophy and started teaching at Government college, Lahore.

He proceeded to Europe for higher studies in 1905.He obtained the degree of Bar-at-Law from London and the degree of Ph.D in philosophy from Germany.His stay in Europe was of great importance.He keenly observed social, economic cultural and political values of Europe.But, the materialism of the western society could not impress him.

Empty of concord is the soul of Europe,
Whose civilization to no Makkah bends.

On his return, he started his law pratice in Lahore High Court.But, he sson gave up this profession because his heart was not in it.His interest was in poetry, philosophy and religion.

Allama Iqbal was much worried about the sad and miserable plight of the Muslims. They were politically,economically and educationally backward, oppressed and exploited.Through his poetry, he wanted to arouse the Muslims from sound-slumber and develop in them political consciousness.He loved the Muslims, because;

Through Love the dead rise to life
He made them conscious of their political,social and religious status. His poetry breathed a new spirit into the Muslims.He wanted to receive the glory past of the Muslims.

Love's madness has departed: in
The Muslims veins the blood runs thin;
Ranks broken,heart perplexed,prayers cold,
No feeling deeper than the skin,

Iqbal was not only a great poet but also a great leader.He did not believe in art for art's sake.Through the medium of his Urdu and Persian poetry, he expressed his political, philosophical and religious ideas.He composed several remarkable poems which carry the inspiring concepts of "Khudi","Murd-e-Momin" and "Shaheen".His poetry infused the spirit of dignity and freedom in the muslims youth and made them realize their religios identity.

Faith is like Abraham at the stake: to be
Self-honoring and God-drunk, is faith

Iqbal is an inspired and creative poet.His poetry is rich in imagery and has remarkable poetic appeal due to the beauty of sound.He expressed his religious and philosophical views by using simple language and beautiful similes. Many volumes of his poetry have been published."Bang-i-Dara","Bal-i-Jabril", "Zarb-i-Kalim","Javaid Nama" and some of them.All of these have become classics of literature.

His giant wings prevent him from walking.

Iqbal's poetry worked wonder in arousing the Muslims from sound-slumber.It greatly inspired politicians, journalists and students.In 1930,Iqbal delivered his historical presidential address in the annual session of all India Muslim League at Allahabad.He asserted that the only solution of the problems of the Indian Muslims was a separate Muslim state.This was the first demand for Pakistan. Though the Muslims achieved Pakistan in 1947.Yet he did no live to see the new Muslim state.He died in 1938 and was buried in Lahore.He will remain alive in the hearts of the Muslims for ever.

"He dies........alas! how soon,
he dies."

Life in a big city

Life in a big city represents the modern mode of life with all of its comforts and vices.It is fast, busy and restless.The city streets are crowded with people.They are always running after one thing or an other. They have no time to stand and stare.

What is the life if, full of care
We have no time to stand and stare

The city life is very different from the village life.It seems an interminable war in different battelfields.

In cities no one is quite but many are lonely.

In a city life is full of charms, facilities and comforts. It has many distinctive advantage. It offers many kind of recreation and amusement. There are clubs where the cultural literary and sports activities carry on day and night. All the necessities and comforts of life are available to the city people.There are big shops,stores and super-markeets where every thing is available for the customers.

The latest and modern medical and educational facilities are available in a big city. The hospitals and clinic are equipped with the latest instruments. The educational facilities are also remarkable in a big city. There are many schools, colleges, technical institutions and universities.That is why, the people in a city are advanced, enlightened and well-dressed and well-educated. They have grater opportunities of employment. there is a great demand for the educated officers and the skilled workers in government offices, private companies and factories in a city.That is why, it is said that

Education is the transmission of civilization

The people enjoy the latest facilities of transportation and communication. They can more from one place to another with speed and comforts. They have the modern facilities of communication like mobile phones and internet.The newspapers keep them well informed about the current issues and fashions of the world. They broaden their outlook and enrich their vision. Cleanliness and proper hygienic condition add to the attraction of a city life.

But, the life in a big city is not all comforts and blessing. The unchecked population has created many problems. Most of the educational and medical facilities are not available to the common man. Traffic problem has become a great nuisance in big cities. In spite of a remarkable progress, the modern amenities are beyond the reach of a common man.

In a big city, the atmosphere is polluted.The factories and automobiles emit smoke day and night and pollute the air. Pure water and food are not easily available. The prices of thing are very high.

Look outside, see the trees
Watch the flowers in the breeze
Things won't be like this in a year or two
If polluting is all we do.

In spite of all luxury, the city people lead a restless and worried life. They are too much busy and have little time for their friends, relatives and families. They are always in a hurry. Despite all these shortcomings, life in a big city is full of charms, comforts and opportunities

"What I like about cities is that
every thing is king size,
the beauty and the ugliness"

Dialogue between a teacher and a student

Teacher:

Hello Meera! You are a bit late today.

Meera:

Yes, Madam, I am sorry.

Teacher::

Well. What happened?

Meera:

The school bus was right on schedule. It was about to cross the canal bridge when it came to a halt with a jerk. The tyre had gone flat.

Teacher:

I see. It's none of your fault then!

Meera:

One thing more, Madam. The driver had no jack with him. He waved to other vehicles but they would not stop. Nobody seemed willing to oblige at this rush hour.

Teacher:

Well. What did you do then? You came by another bus. Didn't you?

Meera:

No, Madam, we left the bus where it was and walked up to school all the way.

Meera:

Well done! You are a brave girl indeed. Now, girls let us get going with our lesson.

The Value of Sports And Games

"A healthy mind in a healthy body" is a well-known adage. So is the saying, 'All work and no play makes jack a dull boy.' Proverbs and saying reveal the practical wisdom and log experience of the world. They are like golden coins whose currency is for ever. Without games and sports our youngsters would develop into cowards, lethargic weaklings and imbeciles. One of the most effective and time-tested ways to ensure healthy growth of body and mind is to make students and young men and women take active part in outdoor activities of sports and games. The aim of education is all round development of the personality of the students, the future of the nation. Unless they are bodily fit, they cannot be mentally competent. It is a well established fact that development of mental faculties depends to a great extent on the proper and timely growth of body and it various organs. For want of physical growth there would be lopsided development and children will be wanting in balanced personality.

Games and sports, athletics and outdoor exercise inculcate discipline, teamwork, patience, sense of justice and fair play, courage, endurance, cooperation and perseverance. These are the qualities which can be easily acquired in the field through playing various games like football, cricket, volleyball, badminton, basketball, tennis etc. Similarly, weight-lifting, gymnastics, swimming, running, jogging, horse-riding etc. are very rewarding as they stimulate physical and mental growth.

Intellectual or mental power as well as manpower are equally important for the progress and development of a nation. Manpower means not merely the number of hands but also the powerful and healthy hands that can venture any task, challenge and odds. Weak hands and faint hearts can neither turn the wheels of industry, nor plough the field, nor protected the country against foreign aggression. It is said and rightly that the battle of Trafalgar was fought and won on the playground of the school where the hero of the war, Horatio Nelson( 1758-1805) played games and enjoyed sports.He got training in discipline and imbibed the qualities of leadership here.

We want tough trained, disciplined, brave, dashing, noble-minded, intelligent, powerful and patriotic citizens, men and women. Such product is possible only when the activities of the students in schools and colleges are judiciously spread over both class-rooms, laboratories, libraries and the arena of sports and games. Swimming pools, gymnasiums, playgrounds and stadiums are as important as class-rooms and libraries. It is by taking part in games and sports right from the elementary school that young men and women can have necessary physical fitness, right mental make-up and abilities to face the tough challenges,realities and difficulties of life when they enter their manhood and womanhood.
